James Charlus Potter was born early on the morning of March 27th, 1960. He was born three weeks premature. His mother, Dorea, was in labor for a grand total of 4 hours from the first contraction to James’ first cry. When he was growing up, she often liked to joke that her little Jamie came out running and never stopped. That’s proved as true in his adult life as it was in his childhood.

A spoiled and doted upon only child, James had a happy and normal wizarding childhood. His father taught him to fly and his mother taught him the importance of family. Not of blood, because she didn’t subscribe to the same ideas most of her relatives did, oh no, but of family and support and love. These lessons have stuck with James and he continues to try to live his life by them.

His school years were punctuated with high marks, great friends, and many detentions. Especially in his earlier years, he spent more time in detention than out of it, it seemed. This “hell-raising” attitude dimmed somewhat as he got older and realized it was gaining him no brownie points with Lily Evans, long the object of his affection. Once they began to spend significant amounts of time together in their final year at Hogwarts, the Head Boy and Head Girl began dating. James proposed to Lily at their graduation ceremony and they were married later that year.

Soon after James and Lily married, Dorea and Charlus both fell ill with a magical version of influenza. Thinking that they could cure it themselves with home remedies, they refused to seek medical attention. When James and Lily finally convinced them to go, it was too late. Charlus succumbed to the illness and Dorea followed him a few weeks later in early 1979. This was a sad time for James and he was near inconsolable. The rest of 1979 passed in much of a haze for him. He’d work for the Order, which he had joined immediately after leaving school, and spend as much time as he could with his wife. Only when Lily told him she was expecting did he begin to pull out of the funk in which he’d found himself.
